Concentrations
All students earn an MBA with an emphasis in sustainability. You may also pursue an optional concentration in any business discipline or use your electives to take any graduate-level courses offered at Duquesne University. Popular concentrations for MBA Sustainability students are supply chain and finance. Student may also earn an MBA with a concentration in environmental science through a partnership with Duquesne's Bayer School of Natural Sciences.
FINANCE CONCENTRATION
Finance as a discipline attempts to decipher the messages sent from investors about the proper objectives of corporate financial decision-making and the strategies that firms use to achieve those objectives. Finance must also deal with the constraints placed on the firm by the external financial markets. A concentration in finance emphasizes maximizing firm value balanced against the constraints placed on the firm by the capital markets. Techniques that create value for the firm are analyzed along with the strategies to create value.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION
A partnership with Duquesne's Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences prepares MBA Sustainability students to manage at the intersection of science, business, legal, ethical and regulatory interests. It is becoming increasingly difficult for business organizations to treat their environmental impacts as strict externalities. A concentration in environmental science prepares graduates to evaluate these impacts and to manage them effectively.
SUPPLY CHAIN CONCENTRATION
Supply chain management is a critical function for sustained competitive advantage. In many industries, businesses no longer compete directly against businesses; instead supply chains compete against supply chains. This concentration provides a strategic, global vantage point for creating value throughout the life cycle; from raw material extraction to customer use and return/reuse/remanufacture.
International Survey of Corporate Responsibility
KPMG’s 2005 International Survey of Corporate Responsibility Reporting reported a shift from purely environmental to broader sustainability (social, environmental , and economic) reporting.
