SMBA 531: SUSTAINABILITY APPLICATIONS
This course builds on the Fall core and introduces advanced concepts in sustainable management and applications in this evolving discipline. Through a combination of student lead presentations, group projects, videos, web based information, field trips, and analyzing current readings/case studies, students will develop the ability to identify sustainable business opportunities, a deep familiarity with sustainable business practices and the application of audits and decision making tools, familiarity with the core environmental drivers and measures to implement sustainable initiatives, and an understanding of the challenges of working within the developing and dynamic field of sustainable business practices.
SMBA 532: ADVANCED ACCOUNTING
An effective manager in today's business world possesses a broad knowledge base. Included in this is an understanding of analytical tools that are commonly used to assess the impact of strategic decision on the operating performance of an organization. Particular attention is paid to internal financial reporting and the role it plays in providing useful information to decision makers. Examples of the types of decisions covered include breakeven and incremental analysis, product pricing, accepting or rejecting a special order and keeping or replacing equipment. Although the primary focus is on the financial impacts of these decisions, ethical, economic and behavioral relationships are also emphasized throughout the course. In the final portion of the course we will shift our focus to current sustainability reporting issues relevant to managers in today's business environment.
SMBA 533: LEADING CHANGE IN SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISES - I
Leading Change in Sustainable Enterprises is a critical thinking course utilizing the theoretical and applied treatments of the most challenging task facing organizations in the 21st century. Students critically review the current literature on organizational change and are exposed to many applications. This combination of theory and practice is designed to help students learn how to successfully diagnose, analyze, and most importantly – "implement" various types of strategic initiatives.
SMBS 534: PUBLIC AFFAIRS MANAGEMENT
This course focuses on understanding the organization's public affairs dimension and the role played by the public affairs manager by enabling students to identify and evaluate key external and internal organizational forces (stakeholders) and environments impacting the organization, with special attention to the realm of sustainable management. Students should become familiar with, and be able to apply, public affairs management tools and skills for dealing with those forces and environments. Public affairs management skills include stakeholder analysis, public issue and crisis management, media relations, social responsibility and corporate citizenship evaluation, regulatory and public policy strategies, and environmental responsibility.
SMBA 543: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR
This course provides a comprehensive, integrated, critical thinking approach to the behavioral issues inherent in managing today's sophisticated and diverse workforce. Philosophically, this course views the employees as a key potential competitive advantage. Utilizing a highly-interactive learning environment, this course focuses on hiring a diverse group of capable people, communicating clearly, effectively appraising employee performance, motivating employees to perform at higher levels, and leading employees with integrity to ensure organizational success.
Blacksmith Institute
The Blacksmith Institute provides strategic, technical, and financial support to combat pollution in developing countries. Supports local leaders in instituting environmental legislation and managing sewage, industrial, solid, hazardous, and medical wastes.
