Global Study Trips
MBA Sustainability students and faculty travel abroad to investigate business and sustainability practices first-hand. The summer trip is part of a required Global Economics course that is co-delivered with partnering universities abroad; the spring trip is optional.
In recent years, destination choices were Asia, South America and Europe, and the itineraries featured the following educational highlights:
Germany and the Netherlands or Belgium (Spring 2011, 2010 & 2009)
- Corporate visits to Bayer, Volkswagen and RWE Energy in Germany and Heineken in Amsterdam
- Interface with faculty and students at the University of Cologne, Germany, and Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, Belgium
- Field investigation of the Port of Rotterdam Climate Initiative and Naaldwijk Flower Auction
- Visit to the European Union Parliament in Brussels
India (Summers 2011, 2010 & 2009)
- Joint projects with MBA students from Saintgits Institute of Management including a series of field studies with microenterprises
- Corporate visits to Tata Group, Ernst & Young Consulting, Synthite Industries and CNG
- Cultural and educational visits to the Taj Mahal and Ghandi Memorial
- Sustainable living experience on a houseboat
Scandinavia & Iceland (Summer 2011)
- Live case study at Alcoa Fjardaál in Reydarfjordur, a greenfield aluminum smelter and one of the biggest development and economic projects in Iceland's history
- Investigating industrial symbiosis network, Kalundborg eco-industrial park, Copenhagen, Denmark
- Interface with faculty and students at the Lund School of Economics and Management, Sweden
- Baltic Climate Seminar at University of Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics, Finland
China (Summer 2010 & Japan (Summers 2010 & 2009)
- Team field work with Chinese graduate students at Beijing Jiaotong University and experiential learning activities with Rikkyo University in Japan
- Corporate visits to Lenovo, Joy Manufacturing and Reed Smith in China and Toshiba, Panasonic, Mazda and Price Waterhouse in Japan
- Cultural visits to the Shanghai World Expo 2010, Great Wall and Forbidden City in China
- Visits to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, Nagano and northern farm lands in Japan
Ecuador
- Field work on a micro-financed project making thatched roofs from recycled materials for ecotourism industry in the rainforest
- Interface with local business owners and government officials
- Work on business planning for harvesting and trading coffee and cacao
World Business Council for Sustainable Development
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a CEO-led, global association of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development. Sector specific projects include: cement, mobility, tires, chemicals, water, energy efficiency in buildings and forestry.
