MBA Sustainability Faculty Awarded Prestigious Page Prize

The faculty team who developed the MBA Sustainability program received the prestigious Page Prize for "best United States submission of an environmental sustainability curriculum" in January 2009. A project of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, the award recognizes efforts to expose business students to state-of-the-art environmental sustainability knowledge.

Alan Miciak, Dean, John F. Donahue Graduate School of Business, Duquesne University, was named among the 100 most influential people in finance by Treasury & Risk magazine in 2008: "The creator of the 'sustainable MBA' program is reaching beyond academia's boundaries to introduce corporate responsibility concepts directly into the business community."

TOP RANKED SUSTAINABLE MBA ASKS: DO YOU HAVE A SUSTAINABLE MINDSET?

Duquesne University, home to one of the world's top ranked programs for integrating social and environmental issues into its Sustainable MBA, finds that this new kind of MBA often attracts a different kind of business mind.

BUSINESS WEEK

Duquesne University and the other schools ranked in the Aspen Institute's Global Top 10 are included in this Business Week article outlining the growth of sustainability content in business school curricula. According to the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education, the percentage of business schools that require students to take a course focused on "business and society" issues has increased dramatically over the past five years, jumping from 34% in 2001 to 63% in 2007.

NEWSWEEK

Duquesne University MBA Sustainability student Chris Togni, 29, was interviewed by Newsweek for a story on future careers in renewable energy and other sustainability-related opportunities. Togni, the son of a steelworker, tells Newsweek that his degree will make him attractive to employers. "It's my differential advantage over other M.B.A.s," he says.

CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

A September 5, 2007, article in the Chronicle of Higher Education mentions Duquesne's MBA Sustainability program, along with efforts by Cornell, Northwestern, Stanford and University of California at Berkeley to focus MBA courses on sustainability and its impact on business strategy, value creation and shareholder return.

Dean Alan Miciak, Ph.D., joined a panel presenting innovative curricula at the MBA Executive Roundtable on November 2, 2007. The event attracted deans and faculty from more than 40 global schools to discuss the integration of sustainability into core business courses.

Duquesne's MBA competition team won three out of five awards for which they were eligible, including the top ethics award, at the 2007 Ethics Fortnight, an international MBA case competition sponsored by Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Duquesne's Beard Center for Leadership in Ethics hosted a major symposium on sustainability in November, 2007 featuring global, national and regional not-for-profit and corporate thought leaders.

High-Growth

Duquesne University and the Hill House Economic Development Corp., have created the Pittsburgh Central Keystone Innovation Zone, designed to generate job growth in technology areas such as medical devices, tissue engineering, drug discovery, pharmaceuticals, compliance engineering, digital media, software, cyber security and nanotechnology.
