About Pittsburgh

GET ORIENTED

Pittsburgh, a major American business center, is home to both Fortune 500 multinationals such as Heinz and PPG, and Inc. 500 companies such as Millennium Pharmacy Systems.

About 2 million people live and work in Pittsburgh’s extended metropolitan area. Most corporations are headquartered downtown, adjacent to the Duquesne University campus, or in close-by neighborhoods.

GET CURRENT

Pittsburgh, once the industrial heart of the nation, today stands among the country's most sustainable cities. A place where innovation, not smoke, spews from knowledge factories. Where some of the world’s most progressive corporations, (ALCOA, PNC) forge a more sustainable future.

  • Ranked No. 10 "World's Cleanest Cities" (Forbes)
  • Second-most 'green-certified' buildings in the nation
  • World's first and largest green convention center

GET AROUND

Topography defines Pittsburgh. The city unfolds in slopes, valleys, ravines, rivers, streams and rambling green space. It's a pedestrian's dream and a road-building nightmare. People navigate by any means necessary-skywalks, stairwells, alleyways, inclines, tunnels and more bridge crossings than any city in the world except Venice. A vast network of bike trails thread the city, some leading right to campus.

GET OUTSIDE

Hike, bike, kayak, canoe. Pittsburgh brings out the adventurer in everyone. The Laurel Highlands, just 45 minutes east of campus, offers white water, alpine and cross-country skiing, and other weekend escapes. Inexpensive outings are coordinated by Duquesne and Venture Outdoors Pittsburgh.

GET HAPPY

Thanks to generous gifts bestowed by the old industrial barons, Pittsburgh enjoys more arts, cultural and entertainment venues and groups than cities twice its size. Two miles east of campus you’ll find The Carnegie Music Hall/Museums and Phipps Conservatory. Downtown’s 14-block Cultural District hums with world-renown opera, ballet, theater and symphony companies. Add a rich tradition for jazz music, and a growing rock scene (Esquire rated Pittsburgh number one among its "Cities That Rock"), and you have a city whose famous work ethic is equaled by its appetite for fun and culture.

  • Cultural District ranked among Top 5 in the nation for number of theaters per capita.
  • Ranked No. 1 among Top 25 U.S. Arts Destinations, mid-sized city category (AmericanStyle)

About Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a perfect example of a 19th-century American city that has reinvented itself for the 21st century. The famous three rivers - Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio - once lined with steel mills, now sparkle next to biking and jogging paths…ethnic enclaves like the South Side and the Strip district now hum with cool shops, great restaurants and loads of places to hang out.
